Yosemite

Yosemite National Park in California is, without a doubt, one of the most stunningly beautiful places in the world. Famous stunning images of the park abound. Like this masterpiece by the great Ansel Adams "Clearing Winter Storm" When a photographer goes to a place like Yosemite it is impossible to forget powerful images like that. Especially when you are also visting the Ansel Adams Gallery while you are in the park. So how on earth do you try to make pictures that are your own and not, as one other photographer recently posted cliches.
I did so by forgetting about them. Ansel Adams and all the other photographers I admire who have worked in Yosemite have done precisely that. They worked. They have had the chance to take pictures at the optimum times of day. I was there for set hours in the day touring around the park trying to be a tourist as well. Here's a selection of my images.
Above: It may be several miles away but Half Dome still towers over this tourists car.
Above: A tourist lost in the magnificence of the park
Above: Close up of a section of Bridalveil falls
Above: Reflection of the trees and mountains in the Merced River.

A cold, cold start to the year

This photograph was taken from exactly the same location as the first picture in this blog, just 9 months before. January 2nd 2011. It was a very cold morning. The temperature was about -10 degrees Celsius. The cold causing steam to rise off the water of Lake Superior making the boat look like its floating on a cloud. I love this picture.

First picture

Taken from the lakefront walk in Duluth, MN at about 7.15 am in the morning. A calm lake, faint suggestions of reflections of the ship and pier in the water. A lovely calm serene scene.
